“There have been great societies that have not used the wheel but there have been no societies that did not tell stories.”

Ursula Le Guin

Inside the Story Centre

The Once Upon an Island Story Centre is an environment that celebrates stories and storytelling. It is the heartful creation of story-o-phile and frockoholic, Tanya Batt. It was opened on the Summer Solstice of 2006.The Centre is a unique venue combining retail, education and performance.

It is the headquarters of the ‘Once Upon an Island Waiheke Storytelling Festival’, held in June of each year over the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

During the year the Centre hosts a number of public activities.

These include the monthly ‘Sunday of Stories’ and the ‘Imagined Worlds’ children’s workshops.

The centre can also be booked for birthday parties and other private functions.
