Monday 14th July - Morning in a Monastery

10 - 12pm $20 (includes materials)

Through art, games and story learn about life in a medieval monastery and make your very own candle to take home with you. Workshop held in con junction with Heartsong Retreat.

Tuesday 15th July - Knight for a Day

10 –2pm Cost $45 (includes lunch)

Enroll in Knight School and join the round table of Waiheke. Lessons in heraldry, chivalry, sword play and much more. A ‘real’ medieval knight will be giving lessons in armor & weaponry & ‘knighting’ able squires at the end of the and day.

Wednesday 16th July - Herbs and Potions

10 - 12pm Cost $20 (includes materials)

Palsy, bruises, coughs and itches. Come and learn about the art of apothecary through story, games and art. Make your own medieval herbal creation. Workshop held in conjunction with Waiheke Blue.

Thursday 17th July - Green Outlaws

10 - 12pm Cost $20

Join the Robin Hood and his merry band of outlaws for games, stories and art activities.

Friday 18th July - The King’s Jester

10am & 11.15am Cost $10

A special programme for 3—5 year olds. Come and meet the King’s Jester. He has a right royal problem and needs yours help. An action packed session of music, movement and storytelling.

Saturday 19th July - Medieval Banquet @ Stefano’s

5 – 7pm Adults $35 Children $22

Knights, ladies, outlaws, peasants and priests. Come and join us for an evening of family fun with the grand finale Medieval Feast at Stefano’s. Price includes a delicious set meal and medieval entertainment by Steve Hollins and Tanya Batt.

One, two, three, four, five.. story island comes alive over the Queen’s birthday weekend - 30th May - 2nd June 2008 with the 5th Once Upon An Island Waiheke Festival of Story. We have tellers traveling from near and far with their sacks of stories. Cathy Spagnoli joins us from the States, Festival favourites Peter and Mary Kippenberger will be arriving from Hawkes Bay and they’ll be joined by a host of on island talent - Emmet Michael Kennedy, Steve Hollins, Tanya Batt and from the ‘Orc - land’ comes musician Craig Denham.

With exhibitions, markets, concerts, quests, puppets, workshops, film and adventures into the subterranean worlds you’ll not be short of a story. Come listen to a story, dance a story, sing a story, explore a story - just make sure you’re part of this story.

Friday 30^th May

6pm Opening of the Fairytale Village

Waiheke Community Art Gallery

This year the festival celebrates its Italian connections and the invitation for Waiheke to join a network of Fairytale Towns, with the creation of an art installation of the ‘Fairytale Village’. Local artists from the Red Shed Collective will be contributing pieces on a fairytale theme to this project and the event celebrated as a ‘Masquerade Ball’ with a dance performance by Other World Productions. Dress up and come celebrate the opening of the 5^th Once Upon An Island Festival of Story.

7 – 8pm Night Market – Artworks Courtyard

An interactive market whose currency is the fairytale. Bring your purse of golden coins to shop at Jack’s Magic Seed Shop, have your fortune told or nibble from the Witches Gingerbread bakery!

8 – 9pm Family Concert – Artworks Theatre

Come and meet this year’s fabulous line up of storytellers, musicians and performers with a rousing opening by the Tamashii Taiko Japanese drum group.

Featuring: Cathy Spagnoli (USA), Peter Charlton Jones and Mary Kippenberger (NZ), Emmet Michael Kennedy (Ireland), Tanya Batt (NZ) and Craig Denham (NZ).

9pm Lantern procession

“This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine…” ! Oneroa will light up with a procession of lanterns made by the primary school aged children of the island.

Join Tanya Batt and musician Craig Denham for an evening of vixen vice. Inspired by the Japanese Kitsune, Tanya will lead you down the dark tunnel of story. An evening of top class food, wine and entertainment, held on one of NZ’s most prestigious vineyards.

Join world class American storyteller Cathy Spagnoli for an introductory storytelling workshop for adults. Participants will explore the use of voice, gesture, language and props in storytelling for any age, and explore the range of storytelling materials, from family stories to original tales. Tips on shaping and telling are then shared in this active workshop.

Come exercise your imagination and creative talents by designing some fancy foot wear using recycled materials and 2^nd hand shoes with the Junk to Funk Team. You shall have a ball!

This mini animation film festival runs through out the Festival weekend, featuring the stories of Croatia’s own Hans Christian Anderson, Ivana Brlic Mazuranic, animated by a team of international animators. Workshops for children in Japanese Story.

Recently returned from her winter in Japan, Tanya Batt invites you to ‘cool off’ this summer with stories and surprises from Japan. Come explore the fascinating realm of Japanese mythology and folklore through music, movement, story and art.A small Japanese snack will be served at the end of each workshop.Workshops last for 75 minutes & are best suited for those 5- 12 years of age.Cost $10. Places limited.

Wed 23^rd Jan 10.30am Foxy Tales – Storytelling and Origami(Cost $10)
Foxes or ‘kitsune’ as they are called in Japan, occupy a fascinating place in the mythological world. They are both shape shifters and the messengers of Inari, the God of Rice. Come and share fox stories and learn to make an origami fox.

Thurs 24^th Jan 10.30am Tricksters of Japan and mask making(Cost $10)
From the ogre like Oni, to the long nosed Tengu and much loved Tanuki – all of these characters are well known tricksters in traditional Japanese folktales. Explore the world of Japanese goblins and ghouls and have a go at making your own.

Friday 25^th Jan 10.30am Kamishibai – Storytelling and Art(Cost $10)
The paper theatre of the Kamishibai was a favourite form of street storytelling in the 1920 – 30’s in Japan. Much loved by children, the Kamishibai player would arrive in the village on his bike with the promise of stories and sweets. Come and listen to a kamishibai story and help make one of your own.

Saturday 26th Jan 2.00pm Stone Gods – Storytelling and Art(Cost $10)
The stone statues so often sited in Japan are known as the Jizo. They are the guardians of children, travelers and pregnant women. Listen to the famous Japanese New Year Folktale of the Jizo and create a Jizo of your own.

Sunday 27^th Jan 11.00am Sunday of Storytelling – Kamishibai (Cost $5)
Summer is the time for outdoors storytelling. Bring your hat and something to sit on for bicycled storytelling in the Artworks courtyard. (in the even of rain the storytelling will take place in the Story Centre).

Wed 30th 10.30am Japan for Preschoolers (3 &4 years)(Cost $10)
A special session of Japanese stories for three and four year old. A fully interactive workshop in songs, movement and art.

Friday 1st Feb 10.30am Proper Princess Party(Cost $5)
In celebration of Tanya Batt’s book, ‘The Princess and White Bear King’ being released in paper back this summer, a proper princess party is being thrown. You are invited to dig out your most flouncy and frivolous frock for an after noon of pure nonsense and storytelling. Please bring a plate suitable for sharing at a princess tea party. Handsome Princes welcome at this right royal occasion.

Sunday 3^rd Feb 11.00am Rat-a-tat-tat : Chinese New Year Stories (Cost $5)
February 7^th marks the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Rat. Come and hear the story of how the Chinese Horoscope came to be and what the Rat year holds in store!

Workshops are limited to 10 children per session. You are strongly encouraged to book to secure your place.
